As the one year phase-out period for genetically engineered crops drew to a close on September 4, 2015, Josephine County citizens gathered to proclaim our county’s status as a GMO FREE ZONE — one of only 9 such zones in the US, along with neighboring Jackson County, together creating a GMO Free Rogue Valley!
Oregonians for Safe Farms and Families (OSFF), along with GMO Free Josephine County, invited the public to celebrate this important September 4th transition, and to attend a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Celebration Sign Party that took to coincide with First Friday activities.
Wood boards and paint supplies were on hand for those wishing to create a hand painted sign for the community.
Live acoustic music by Takilma-based acoustic guitar player Terry Davis served to create a wonderful ambiance, and The Oregon Woodpickers were on hand playing Old Time and Irish Music with Ari Dwyer on fiddle, Jack Dwyer on 5-string and tenor banjos and mandolin, and Carol Valentine on guitar, harmonica, and fiddle. The evening was rounded out by activities for children and a photo booth.
